To celebrate 2016 Lunar New Year Street Party and to usher in the year of the Monkey, Moonta Street (Chinatown) and Gouger Street will be filled with stalls, exhibitions, and entertainments from various cultural groups, showcasing Asian cultures and traditions of arts, crafts and foods. This year, it is anticipated that over 20,000 people from all over South Australia and beyond will be expected to attend the Chinese New Year street party. “Back in 2004, Chinatown’s Lunar New Year celebration attracted just a few hundred people.Chinatown Adelaide of SA Inc.president George Chin says the event has gone from strength to strength. Though Lunar New Year technically begins on February 19, celebrations will roll on from 10am-10.30pm on Saturday, February 21, with a program full of entertainment from various Asian cultural groups, plus food stalls and craft demonstrations. A street party will take over at 5.30pm, including a gala dinner under the stars. Mr Chin, who is also on the board of Education Adelaide, says many Chinese international students have volunteered to help prepare the event. Adelaide has roughly 12,000 Chinese university students but Lunar New Year is not only celebrated by Chinese people. That’s why we call it Lunar New Year and not Chinese New Year It is celebrated by people in Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam … and SA is a multicultural

The Hon. Chris Schacht has completed a busy week of activities related to the OzAsia Shandong opening and to events related to South Australia receiving a delegation of Chinese officials including Chinese Ambassador Mr Ma Zhaoxu. Following SA Premier Jay Weatherill’s keynote speech on 3rd September to Mr Ma Zhaoxu, Mr Schacht attended the opening night performance of OzAsia. Performed by Qingdao Song and Dance Theatre, Red Sorghumis a visually spectacular modern dance drama. Mr Schacht said it is a great promotion of Qingdao as a centre of cultural excellence. The following night he enjoyed Shandong Acrobatic Troupe’s Dream of the Ghost Story of which he remarked there was an amazing synthesis of acrobatics, ballet, modern dance and chinese/western music style, with a special mention to the stunning costumes and sets. He noted both performances received long standing ovations. On Monday 7th September, he was pleased to be in attendance
