Chinatown businesses are appealing for help to cash in on the explosive growth of Chinese tourists to the state.

Businesses say Chinatown needs better signage and promotion to make the area more of a destination, the City Messenger reports.

The number of Chinese tourists to South Australia has increased from 5500 in 2005 to 21,000 in 2011, according to Tourism Commission figures.

International Food Court owner and former Chinatown president Irena Zhang said the West End precinct was often overlooked by the SA Tourism Commission and the City Council when it came to tourism promotion.
